Redefining the experience in the frozen food section
A system developed for Findus to improve the preservation of frozen products throughout the entire in-store shopping experience.
The idea originated in Findus’s innovation department, with the goal of exploring new ways to maintain the cold chain from the freezer aisle all the way to when the bags are loaded into the car.
PQ Design Group was brought in to turn this idea into a real product by designing a passive thermal storage system that could be integrated directly into shopping carts and quickly tested in the field.
The project included industrial design, product development, prototyping, and the production of an initial pilot batch used for real-world testing at retail locations.
Particular attention was paid to integration with the shopping cart, ease of use, the system’s durability, and brand visibility within the retail environment.
Through direct observation of user behavior and the operational dynamics of the retail location, the project was progressively optimized to improve the user experience, feasibility, and integration into the real-world context.
The result was an experimental system designed to quickly validate the idea's potential through practical testing and feedback gathered directly from the market.
Design Challenges
1. Integration into the retail environment
Development of a system designed to integrate easily and reliably with the shopping carts used in retail stores.
2. Passive thermal storage
Definition of a thermal system designed to improve the preservation of frozen products throughout the entire shopping experience.
3. Rapid field validation
Production of an initial pilot batch used to gather real-world feedback from users and operators and quickly validate the system's potential in a retail setting.
